ScribeFire (previously Performancing for Firefox) Updated

Friday, March 9th, 2007

ScribeFire logo Version 1.4 of Performancing for Firefox has been released, and in the process, it has been rebranded as ScribeFire. The homepage has moved as well, from Performancing.com to ScribeFire.com.

Besides the name change, this release includes the following changes:

  • Support for Blogger blogs has been improved (now you can even post with ampersands!)
  • We've added support for the new Wordpress API. What does this mean? If you have a Wordpress blog that supports the new API (currently any blog at wordpress.com), you will be able to add, edit, and delete pages directly from ScribeFire, as well as create new categories. (The API will be included in the next major Wordpress release, for all non-wordpress.com blogs.)
  • General bug fixes and code optimization.

I'm new to this project, having been asked to pick up where the previous developer left off, so I'm not completely up-to-speed on what the most-requested fixes and features are. So in the spirit of catching me up, feel free to comment below with any feedback until the new ScribeFire.com site is up and running.

You can download ScribeFire from the Mozilla Addons preview site.

Sorry, Austria

Monday, March 5th, 2007

I've updated URL Fixer to version 1.3.1; new features since 1.3 are a Czech translation and a fix so that it no longer tries to correct www.orf.at (a popular Austrian news site) to www.org.at (not a popular Austrian news site).

You can install or upgrade URL Fixer from its homepage.

Greencode Wordpress Theme Update (0.4)

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

I've updated the Greencode Wordpress theme (which I'm using on my site) to version 0.4. Since version 0.3, I've added a a custom view for the Nintendo Wii (screenshot below), refined the tag cloud, and fixed a few miscellaneous bugs.

ScribeFire Development

ScribeFire logoFYI: I've been hired to continue the development of the Performancing for Firefox extension (soon to be rebranded as ScribeFire), so I'll be posting about its progress occasionally.

Feed subscribers

Friday, February 16th, 2007

Now that Google Reader is reporting the number of users subscribed to a feed, I can finally tell that there are 35 people using Google Reader to read my feed. I wouldn't have thought that 35 people *total* subscribed to my feed, but judging by what the other user-agents are reporting, about 50 people use a Web-based feed aggregator to subscribe to my blog. Neat!

Top 100 Update

I just wanted to post that, despite some, ahem, setbacks, the Digg Top Users list is still being updated daily and is as accurate as ever.

Netscape 9 Teasers: Week IV

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

I just posted this week's Netscape 9 update at the Netscape blog: Netscape 9 Saves You Time:

"Netscape 9 will be the first major browser to automatically correct common typos entered in the location bar. The browser will watch for nearly 30 different types of common mistakes and correct them for you (asking you to confirm, if you choose to enable confirmation), hopefully saving you some time and frustration in the process."

Ahead of the curve

Business Week reports:

"Later this year, Digg will launch a recommendation tool able to expose members to fellow Diggers who appear to have similar interests, says Rose. 'Digg will be smart enough to know what interests you,' says Rose. The site will identify those with like interests in part by the previous stories they have dug and 'buried'—the site's term for voting down a story."

Oh, you mean like this?

Netscape's Potential Friends Feature

Yahoo shortens search box, makes Techmeme

Seriously, why is this news? They slapped a "width: 192px;" in their style tag, and I see it in half a dozen of my RSS feeds.

Netscape 9 Teasers: Week III

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

This week at the Netscape blog, I wrote about the allowances we've made in Netscape 9 for installing extensions targeted at Firefox 2:

"Since Netscape 9 will share an architecture with Firefox 2, it is very likely that most Firefox 2 extensions will work in Netscape 9 without modification. This is why Netscape 9 will allow you to install extensions that list Firefox 2 as a compatible version but do not explicitly list Netscape as well. This feature will give all users of Netscape 9 immediate access to Firefox's wealth of custom extensions without having to wait for each author to update the extension's compatibility file."

Check it out.
